Growing up, I have spent a lot of time admiring the Catalina Mountains. I could see them from my house, from my high school, and just driving around. They have sort of become a symbol of my hometown.
On the night of June 5th, there was a massive thunder and lightning storm. At some point that night, a lightning strike set the Catalina Mountains on fire. I took photos of the smoke erupting from the Catalina Mountains on June 6th at 10 a.m. Watching the smoke was a unique experience, and it made the mountain peak look like a volcano. I was also able to photograph the helicopters while they dropped water and fire retardant on the mountains. The plane shown in one of the photos below was also used to dump fire retardant.
That night at 10 p.m., I returned to take photos of the mountains that were now engulfed in flames. In the daylight, it was hard to tell how much of the mountains were burning. At night, the flames lit up the sky. It was such a surreal experience sitting in a parking lot watching the mountains I love get more and more overwhelmed by fire.
